At
the start of the series they make couple things clear, the main point
is that the story is going to revolve around the Sakura dorm and the
people that live there. It seems like the dorm has a bad reputation,
because the school has a history of sending all the problem case
there. Misaki is extremely talented and has already produce several
successful anime but has a bit of extreme personality. Jin is a
womanizer but is a skillful writer that creates the scripts for
Misaki's anime. Ryuunosuke is a computer programmer but is a complete
shut-in that never leaves his room. Chihiro is the supervisor of
Sakura dorm while also being a teacher, but is extremely sensitive about being over thirty and hopes to marry a rich single parent.
While Sorata is the only normal one that lives there and it seems
more like he is the manager of the dorm rather than his teacher
Chihiro.
Later
on it is discover the reason on why he is there, is because he took
in a stray cat. However his dorm didn't allow resident to keep pets,
so the school gave him a choice to more to Sakura dorm or get rid of
the cat. Although he desires to leave Sakura dorm he is unwilling to
abandon the cat he found, and he hasn't yet found someone to take it
in. Also in his time there, it has lead him into taking in even more
cats. It seems that Sorata is going anywhere anytime soon. Then just
before he leave school his teacher Chihiro gives him a new
responsibility, that her cousin is going to be living at Sakura dorm.
That he needs to go and pick her up, this leads Sorata to question on
why her cousin is going to live a Sakura dorm wouldn't be better if
she live at the normal dorm. This cause Chihiro to allude to the fact
that it is the best place for her, even though he doesn't understand
what she means he still does as he is told.
While
in the beginning when Sorata meets Shiina, he see her as another
unfortunate case like himself that is going to be force to live at
the mad house called Sakura dorm. The next day as he is about to go
to school Chihiro orders him to take Shiina to school, this leads him
to believe this is simply because it is going to be her first day.
However her strangely instant behavior makes him believe that
something isn't right. When he enters her room, this leads him to
understand what she meant. Shiina may be talented but she is
completely useless at everyday tasks like dressing herself and going
to bed. It seems with the appearance of Shiina there is no-longer any
hope of him leaving, since he now has to look after Shiina which
appears to 24/7 job.
