The
interesting thing about this is how it is a parody on the holy bible.
The plot is based on one of the lines from genesis, that god create
the world in six days and rested on the seventh. Instead it defines
the world as create in five day, the rest on the sixth. However on
the seventh he abandoned the world. That in this current world you
can't rest in peace unless you receive a burial by a Grave-keeper.
Our story begins with a young Grave-keeper called Ai, where she
spends her days digging grave for the villagers that are going to die
one day. Then as finishes the last of the graves she begins to
question her purpose, with no more grave to dig then what is left for
her. This is a prelude to the arrival of Humpnie Humbert.
That
with his arrival his arrival Ai's world is shattered, that in the
beginning she believe he was her father that her mother told her
about would one day return. However it turns out that it isn't his
true name but an alias. It isn't until he reveals that he killed
everyone in town that she rejects him as her father, even when he
denied it the whole time. Although when she claims that he murdered
them, Humbert argues that he only stopped them. That it is the job of
the Grave-keeper to kill them. Then when one of them raise from the
dead it become clear that they were never alive to began with. That
they could have been dead for the entire time that Ai knew them. This
leaves Ai to finish her job that she began and that is filling in the
graves that she dug.
That
with the village finished, Humbert alludes to the fact that the
everyone she knew lied to her. That the fact she is able to feel
emotions reveals that she is human and not a Grave-keeper. Then with
this Humbert shows her a true Grave-keeper and also why he talk to
her the way he did when they first met. Although Humbert get surprise
of his own when he ask this Grave-keeper to give a proper burial to
the town people. However she response to his request by implying that
Ai did give them a proper burial. This raise a question of what Ai
really is since Grave-keeper aren't human, but at the same time Ai
acts human. Then the purpust of the mystery behind Ai is put on hold
because of the apperance of Yuri.
Then
once it is revealed that Yuri wants to kill Humbert in a fight to the
death because Humbert kill his wife. However to be more accurate
Humbert put his dead wife to rest. That it also turns that he
daughter has died as well. That is claim of by Yuri to get revenge on
Humbert is a lie. That since Humbert is immortal, that means that it
is impossible for Yuri to get his revenge so he wants his friend to
kill him because he can't do it himself. That this is the first hint
at the deeper darkness that is awaiting Ai outside her village.
Then
with a false promise to Yuri that they will have their duel at dawn,
he leave town with Ai following behind him because she has nothing
left here. This leads into the explanation behind to two mystery
surrounding the two of them. That Ai's mother was a broken
Grave-keeper that fell in love with a human hence why she was born.
That Ai herself is a hybird between a human and a Grave keeper. While
Humberts immortality revolves around his wish that he made when the
world was abandoned by god. That Humbert believe one that fateful day
God granted ever one their deepest wish. That people stopped dying
because they feared what came after death but in time they want to
die, so God sent the grave-keepers. This is related to his
immortality because he wish to live a life free of his illness, and
his wish was granted. This also relates to why he was going to kill
Ai because she said she didn't want to die. That Humbert believe that
they only way a person can live in this world and not become on of
the living dead is if they wish to live. That no other wish can save
them.
